As the Navy sunsets the C-2A Greyhound, the aircraft leaves a lasting mark defined by operational expertise and a long-standing industry—Navy partnership.

 

For 60 years, the C-2A Greyhound has kept U.S. Navy carrier strike groups supplied, connected and ready. Developed by Northrop Grumman and fielded in the late 1960s, the C-2A was purpose-built for the carrier-onboard-delivery (COD) mission, moving people, high-priority parts, mail and other critical assets from shore to sea. Across decades of operations and deployments, it became a trusted logistics workhorse and a welcome sight to U.S. Navy crews deployed around the world.

 

A Mission-Critical Link from Shore to Sea

 

The C-2A’s primary mission has always been clear: provide a fast, reliable logistics link between land bases and deployed carriers.

 

The Greyhound’s large, unobstructed cargo compartment and rear loading ramp gave it the capacity and flexibility to transport high-value, time-sensitive components, like jet engines and major assemblies, maintenance tools and equipment, and personnel moving to and from the ship. The C-2A is also designated as a special warfare asset capable of airdropping special operations personnel and gear directly into the water.

 

By delivering critical parts and people directly to the flight deck, the C-2A helped maintain a carrier’s ability to remain deployed and operationally effective during peacetime and combat deployments.

 

Built for the Carrier Environment

 

From its inception, the Greyhound was designed around the unique demands of carrier aviation. Its folding wings and onboard auxiliary power unit for engine starting and ground power self-sufficiency in remote areas provide an operational versatility found in no other cargo aircraft.

 

Since the Greyhound first entered service, it has been joined on the flight deck by a succession of iconic Navy aircraft—ranging from the A-6 Intruder and F-14 Tomcat to the F/A-18 Hornet and Super Hornet and the fifth-generation F-35 Lightning II. The C-2 also shared 53% of its parts with E-2 series aircraft, enabling a robust and efficient sustainment model throughout C-2's lifespan.

 

Through upgrades and continuous maintenance, the platform remained relevant and effective as carrier operations evolved, new technologies came aboard and global requirements shifted.

 

Delivering More Than Cargo

 

For the sailors deployed on carriers far from home, the C-2A was more than a logistics platform. It was a tangible connection to life beyond the horizon.

 

Alongside priority cargo and passengers, the Greyhound also delivered mail, sometimes including care packages with personal items that helped crews maintain a sense of normalcy during deployments.

 

The sound of the C-2’s approach signaled not only the arrival of mission-essential parts, but also small reminders of family and friends from home to sustain morale at sea.

C-2A Greyhounds are on display at Naval Air Station North Island, the USS Midway Museum, Patuxent River Naval Air Museum and the National Naval Aviation Museum (currently on loan to the Pima Air and Space Museum).
