At the heart of the Pacific, where the stakes for technological superiority and strategic dominance are at their peak, the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command's (INDOPACOM) exercise Valiant Shield stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation.

Our continued partnership with the U.S. Military during exercises like Valiant Shield in the Indo-Pacific theatre exemplifies our commitment to enhancing readiness and strategic capabilities and bringing advanced capabilities from across air, land, sea, space, and cyber.

This was the seventh exercise that Lockheed Martin has participated in with INDOPACOM to improve interoperability and advance integrated deterrence. And we are just getting started.

About Valiant Shield

Valiant Shield 2024 is a multinational, biennial field training exercise focused on integrating interoperability in a multi-domain environment. The exercise builds real-world proficiency in sustaining joint forces by detecting, locating, tracking, and engaging units at sea, in the air, in space, on land, and in cyberspace in response to a range of mission areas.

This was the tenth iteration of exercise Valiant Shield and concluded on June 17, 2024, following several days of joint operations at sea, in the air, on land, and in cyberspace.

Strategic Perspectives

By seamlessly integrating advanced C2 planning capability, we are enhancing critical warfighter workflows and decision-making. This focus ensures our Service members are equipped with the tools they need to succeed in complex, real-world scenarios, paving the way for faster, more effective mission integration.

What we did

Teams from across Lockheed Martin showcased advanced technologies across multiple domains.

Command and Control - Lockheed Martin successfully integrated digital command and control (C2) capabilities with the first version of the Pentagon’s Joint Fires Network during the exercise. The exercise showcased the seamless integration of Lockheed Martin’s advanced command and control functions, employing Operational Planning to coordinate real-time decision-making across the theater of operations, with all the Services and operational domains. This approach enhanced the agility and responsiveness of joint operations, using live real-time data, and producing joint tasking orders in an operationally relevant environment. Valiant Shield marks the first test of the initial Joint Fires Network prototype, which will provide crucial insights for the Pentagon’s ongoing CJADC2 efforts.

Space-Based ISR-Collection Orchestration – As part of its Global Overwatch Experiment, Lockheed Martin used its Space Kit, which is an interface that connects tactical warfighting systems to space Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) services. In this experiment, the Kit autonomously looked at available Commercial and National overhead remote-sensing systems to determine the “best” collection strategy (e.g. platform, modality and parameters) to observe specified entities of interest, and then plan and schedule collection windows to monitor them. Once these ISR collections occurred, the Kit’s Sensor Processing Pipeline quickly ingested and enhanced the associated imagery, performed Automated Target Detection, and classified potential foes and friends within minutes. Along the way, the Kit automatically translated the imagery using the appropriate data fabric to allow for delivery across platforms.

Why it Matters

Beginning in 2019 with Talisman Sabre and as part of the command’s Pacific Deterrence Initiative, Lockheed Martin has participated in a series of exercises that have each demonstrated progressively expanded capabilities:

    Talisman Sabre 2021 and 2019

    Northern Edge 2023, 2021

    Valiant Shield 2022, 2020

At Valiant Shield 2024, Lockheed Martin continued to push the boundaries of military readiness and effectiveness under our 21st Century Security® vision. By driving forward the integration and interoperability among joint forces, we are actively contributing to the advancement of the U.S. military's Joint All-Domain Operations objectives. Each exercise leverages insights from previous engagements to validate and refine our capabilities, ensuring that the U.S. and its allies remain perpetually prepared for future challenges.
