Cyprus’s Ministry of Defence has officially agreed with the Slovak company HELI to lease four Black Hawk helicopters in a strategic move to strengthen firefighting efforts during the upcoming fire season. This lease will take effect on April 1 and extend through October 31, with a potential for an additional 30-day extension.

The formalisation of this agreement took place on Friday, with Defence Director Panayiotis Symeou representing the ministry and HELI's Managing Director Dzurus Josef acting on behalf of the company. The Ministry of Defence has expressed confidence that the introduction of these helicopters will enhance Cyprus’s aerial capabilities for combating wildfires, which are a significant concern during the hotter months.

Each of the leased Black Hawk helicopters is set to be outfitted with advanced features, including a state-of-the-art rapid-fill tank. This tank can hold up to 4,500 litres of water or a mixture of fire-retardant foam, allowing for a refill time of just 45 seconds, which is critical in emergencies. Furthermore, the helicopters will come with a team of experienced pilots and mechanics. This addition will expand the nation’s firefighting fleet to a total of eleven aircraft by May, ensuring a more robust aerial response.

The Defence Ministry has articulated its ongoing commitment to enhancing preparedness and operational efficiency in response to firefighting requirements. Fire Chief Nikos Longinos has been vocal about the persistent gaps in the current system, particularly pointing out deficiencies in evacuation planning, compliance with fire safety regulations, and the overall aerial firefighting capability, especially in rural regions of Cyprus.

Longinos has raised pressing concerns regarding the geographic challenges faced by certain villages, which are situated far from staffed fire stations. He highlighted the risk posed to communities during evening fires, emphasising that “by the time a fire truck arrives, we will lose a house or something else.” This statement underscores the urgent need for improved coverage and the enforcement of fire safety measures. The arrival of the leased helicopters on April 1 is seen as a vital step in mitigating the temporary gaps created by the unavailability of two forestry aircraft that are currently out of service.

In addition to aerial firefighting resources, the Ministry of Defence and the forestry department have made significant strides in expanding ground-level firefighting capabilities. The workforce has now grown to 606 forest firefighters, thanks to the recruitment of one hundred new personnel over the last two years. Moreover, innovative strategies such as controlled burning and grazing have been introduced to effectively manage and reduce fuel loads in forested areas, which is essential to preventing wildfires and safeguarding communities. This multifaceted approach highlights Cyprus’s dedication to enhancing its firefighting infrastructure and readiness in the face of increasing wildfire threats.
